How Quantity Affects Price in Contract Manufacturing

If you’ve ever wondered why pricing changes based on quantity, the answer is quite simple: volume drives efficiency.

At CAMM Metals, how many parts you order (and how often you order them) directly impacts how we approach your project, which in turn affects cost and lead time.

Continue reading to find out why.

The Link Between Price and Quantity

quantity

In many cases, pricing and quantity are inversely related. That means the more parts you order, the lower your cost per part becomes.

This is because higher volumes allow us to:

  • Spread setup time across more parts

  • Purchase material in higher quantities, often with greater discounts

  • Optimize machine run time

  • Leverage better pricing from our vendors on secondary processes

Simply put, a 100-part project will have a different price per part than a 10-part job, and there are reasons for that.

Why small orders cost more

Every job, regardless of size, requires setup, programming, material handling, and labor.

For smaller quantities, those fixed costs are spread over fewer parts, increasing the price per unit. This is often where minimum lot charges come into play.

For larger orders, those same costs are distributed more efficiently, which is why higher-volume jobs often receive more aggressive pricing.

Transparency During Quoting Tells Us the Full Picture

One of the most important things you can do when submitting an RFQ is to be upfront about your quantities, including if and how often your job will repeat.

For example, are you ordering 20 parts at one time or 20 parts every month? These are two very different scenarios, and they impact how we quote the job.

If we know a part will repeat throughout the year, we can:

  • Offer more competitive pricing

  • Plan production more efficiently

  • Align material purchasing with your long-term needs

How repeat orders improve pricing

If your annual usage is 250 parts but you plan to take delivery in 20-piece batches, sharing that information upfront makes a big difference, as it allows us to:

  • Optimize setup time across multiple runs

  • Plan machine capacity more effectively

  • Provide pricing that reflects the total annual volume

In many cases, customers who issue blanket orders or communicate repeat demand see meaningful cost savings over time.

Better planning leads to better results

When we understand your demand, we can plan accordingly across our entire operation. This visibility helps us anticipate material needs and maintain proper staffing levels, so we can build a stronger, more accurate production schedule.

Without all relevant information, we need to react in real time. With it, we can proactively optimize your project.

CAMM Metals: A True Fabrication and Machining Partner

At CAMM Metals, we’re always willing to work with customers based on their unique needs. If your quantities change, we can update pricing accordingly.

As a trusted fabrication shop, our goal is to align our processes with your production needs, whether that involves simple, one-off projects or complex, repeat jobs. And the key to delivering the best outcome (for both cost and performance) is clear communication from the start. By sharing accurate quantities, expected order frequency, and long-term demand, you give us the ability to:

  • Offer better pricing

  • Improve lead times

  • Deliver a smoother, more predictable experience

If you’re planning an upcoming project, let’s start the conversation early. Request a quote to kick off the partnership!
