Why It’s Important to Maintain an Open Line of Communication with Your Fabrication Shop

In our line of work, no two jobs are exactly the same. Every customer approaches us with a different set of expectations, requirements, and end-use scenarios. That’s why, at CAMM Metals, we believe that clear, consistent communication between customers and fabrication shops is the key to successful results.

Your Parts Are Custom. Your Requirements Are, Too.

As a job shop that serves a wide range of industries—from aerospace to construction and beyond—we’ve learned that drawing and part files only tell part of the story. To deliver truly successful results, we need the full picture.

Additionally, we understand that every customer has their own standards and norms. One customer may expect detailed inspection reports by default, while another might have very specific packaging needs that aren’t mentioned on the print. These preferences might feel run-of-the-mill to the customer, but if they aren’t communicated, they can easily be missed.

What You Should Always Tell Your Fabricator

At CAMM Metals, there’s no such thing as too much information. For the best results, we encourage our customers to overcommunicate. Here are some of the most important (and commonly overlooked) details to share with your fabrication shop:

True Lead Time Expectations

When we receive quotes without specifications on lead times, our team might quote our standard lead time while doing what we can to ensure the lowest price. However, when our customer requires a five-day lead time, we ask that they specify as early as possible. When we know the most important objectives of your project, we can balance cost with turnaround.

Documentation Requirements

Need material certs, inspection reports, or certificates of conformance? Inform our team upfront so we can include the right documentation.

Packaging Instructions

Do parts need to be labeled individually? Stored on a shelf? Kept in a certain orientation? These seemingly small details can make a significant difference in your overall satisfaction.

Finishing Preferences

Whether you’d prefer welds that are simply cleaned or you require them ground smooth with a flawless finish, we’re happy to deliver what you need. Just be sure to include your finishing expectations so our team knows precisely what you’re looking for.

Inspection Methods

At CAMM Metals, we make it our mission to inspect parts using the same tools and methods our customers will use. That way, there are no surprises upon delivery.

Our team is flexible and more than willing to meet our customers’ requests—we simply need to know what they are as early as possible in the process.

Our Approach: Ask, Listen, Deliver

As a full-service metal fabrication shop, CAMM Metals offers a wide range of capabilities under one roof, from waterjet cutting and laser cutting services to metal forming and welding services. With every job, our first priority is to understand our customers’ needs. For that reason, we encourage our customers to “overshare” during the quoting process and early stages of production. Even if they aren’t certain whether or not something will influence the final product, it’s best to err on the side of caution.

Need to make a mid-production change? No problem. The fastest and easiest way to reach us is with a quick phone call. Real-time conversations help us make on-the-fly adjustments with speed and clarity. If you need to make a change outside of business hours, emails and voicemails are also welcome, and you’ll hear back from us the following business day.

If you’re seeking a sheet metal fabrication shop that sees you as more than just a part number, CAMM Metals is here to help. Our team specializes in a range of services that are tailored to your needs, from start to finish.
